What do the sources in SalesViewer® mean?
In SalesViewer®, the “Source” column for a website visit refers to the origin of the website visitor, i.e., how the visitor arrived at your website.
This information is important to understand which marketing and sales strategies are the most effective or which sources generate the most potential customers.
Here are some typical sources that might appear in this column:
- Direct: As the name suggests, this refers to access via direct entry of the website URL or by clicking on the saved website (e.g., bookmark) in the browser.
- Internal: This means that the user was already on your website (e.g., tab/window open in the background) and switched to a new page within the same domain by clicking on internal links, menus, or other navigation elements, thus creating an active session again. The “Internal” source also appears if the visitor was previously on a subpage that does not have the SalesViewer® code implemented.
- Referral: This source refers to visitors who arrived at your website via external links. A classic example is a mention in a blog or a directory entry that directly links to your website.
- Ads: This source refers to visitors who arrived at your website through paid advertisements on platforms like Google, Bing, LinkedIn, Facebook, or other ad networks. It indicates that the traffic was generated by clicks on paid search ads, display ads, or social media ads.
- Google/Bing/Instagram etc.: If only a platform or search engine is displayed as the source, it means that the visitor arrived at your website through organic search results or posts on the respective platform.
- Campaign: This source refers to visitors who arrived at your website through specific marketing campaigns. This often includes UTM-tagged links used in email newsletters, social media posts, paid ads, or other promotions. The traffic is identified by the unique parameters integrated into the URLs to more accurately track the campaign’s performance.
